OpenAI has rolled out notable updates to its Advanced Voice Mode, aimed at enhancing the interaction between users and its AI-powered voice assistant. The improvements, announced on March 25, 2025, focus on reducing interruptions during pauses, making the experience more seamless and engaging.

Manuka Stratta, a post-training researcher at OpenAI, revealed the updates in a video shared on the company’s official channels. Free-tier users can expect better responsiveness, as the assistant has been optimized to recognize pauses in conversation without cutting users off. Subscribers to OpenAI’s Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro plans will enjoy an even more refined version, which offers more direct, engaging, concise, and creative responses.

These enhancements come as competition in the AI voice assistant market intensifies. OpenAI’s updates reflect the company’s commitment to improving user experience, ensuring that its voice assistant remains at the forefront of conversational AI.

In addition to these functional upgrades, OpenAI also released findings from a study titled Investigating Affective Use and Emotional Well-being on ChatGPT. Conducted over 28 days with nearly 1,000 participants, the study examined how frequent interactions with AI, particularly through voice-enabled features, can influence emotional well-being. The research categorized heavy ChatGPT users as "power users" and highlighted concerns about the potential emotional effects of increased reliance on AI, such as loneliness and emotional dependence.

The study, conducted in collaboration with MIT Media Labs, emphasizes the growing concern about the long-term impact of anthropomorphic AI on human behavior and emotional health.
