GPT-5 Unveiled with Major Upgrades; OpenAI Plans India Visit in September

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, the latest and most advanced version of its AI language model, available now to free and paid ChatGPT users as well as developers via API. The new model boasts significant improvements in reasoning, speed, accuracy, and mathematical abilities.
At the product launch, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spotlighted India’s rapid rise in the global AI landscape. “India is our second-largest market after the US, and it may soon become our largest,” Altman said. He praised the innovative ways Indian users are leveraging AI, calling it “quite remarkable.”
To further boost AI accessibility and affordability in India, OpenAI is partnering with local firms. Altman also confirmed plans to visit India in September, underscoring the company’s commitment to the market.
GPT-5 Features and Availability
GPT-5 comes in three variants — GPT-5, GPT-5-mini, and GPT-5-nano — offering developers a choice between high performance and cost efficiency. The API offers a reasoning-enabled GPT-5 model alongside a lighter, non-reasoning GPT-5-chat-latest.
Altman highlighted GPT-5’s leap forward from GPT-4, particularly for delivering expert-level responses. “For the first time, interacting with our mainline model feels like talking to a PhD-level expert,” he explained. Notably, GPT-5 is available in the free tier for all users, a first for OpenAI’s flagship models.
Current ChatGPT Team users already have access, with Enterprise and Education customers set to receive GPT-5 next week. An advanced GPT-5 Pro model, offering extended reasoning and enhanced reliability, will also roll out soon.
Subscription and Pricing
♦ ChatGPT Plus subscribers (around ₹1,660/month) enjoy increased GPT-5 usage limits.
♦ Pro-tier users (around ₹16,600/month) get unlimited access to GPT-5 Pro, featuring more detailed and dependable responses.
Why It Matters
