Google has rolled out a new voice-enabled functionality named "Search Live" under its AI Mode experiment, aiming to simplify how users interact with search on mobile. The new feature supports live, voice-based queries and back-and-forth conversations, bringing a more intuitive experience similar to Gemini Live or ChatGPT’s voice mode.
Available through the Google app, Search Live lets Android and iOS users engage in real-time spoken interactions. Instead of typing queries, users can tap the "Live" icon under the search bar and begin a voice-based session. The feature currently remains limited to participants in Google’s Labs program.
Once enabled, Search Live continues running in the background, enabling multitasking and cross-app usage. A transcript function allows voice responses to be read in text format, enhancing accessibility. All voice interactions are stored within the AI Mode history for later reference.
The voice-powered experience is powered by a custom version of Google’s Gemini AI model, offering enhanced voice processing for improved query handling. Though similar to Gemini Live, Search Live has distinct features tailored for voice-first interactions via the Google Search platform.
Google has confirmed that camera capabilities will be added to Search Live, enabling users to ask real-time questions about objects or scenes through their device camera. This extension is currently undergoing testing and is only accessible within the United States.
