Google has made an official announcement confirming that the first generation AI smart glasses of the company will be launched in 2026. This was disclosed at the The Android Show: XR Edition wherein the company presented its major updates to the XR ecosystem and also gave a glimpse of the new devices.

Fashionable, Light & Designed for Constant Use

Google has partnered with Samsung, Gentle Monster, and Warby Parker to come up with cool, comfy, and non-tiring glasses for all-day wear. The concept is to mix modern technology with daily fashion—something the users would not mind wearing outside at all.

The company is working on two types of AI smart glasses, which are:

1. AI Glasses (Screen-Free Assistance)

These glasses are meant for users who favor the intelligence factor without a screen right in front of their eyes.

Main Features:

  • Integration of speakers, microphones, and cameras
  • Interaction with AI is through voice only
  • Capability of taking pictures, answering queries, and giving context-sensitive help
  • Suitable for voice-oriented interactions and getting assistance while moving around

Google claims that the aim is to provide natural, no-screen AI help—optimal for activities like recalling important points, finding out about new places, or asking short questions about the environment.

2. Display AI Glasses (In-Lens Visual Information)

These glasses provide a richer experience through a tiny in-lens display that reveals real-time information privately.

What you can do:

  • Get navigation with step by step directions shown right in front of you
  • Receive live translation captions
  • Show context overlays when required
  • Experience augmented reality that is immersive yet not heavy

This version is for people who want discreet AR features but don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of a headset.

Google’s Commitment to the Extensive XR Ecosystem

The AI glasses release is part of a much larger strategy by Google to enhance the Android XR ecosystem, which currently includes the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, with more devices such as XREAL's Project Aura, set to be launched in the future.

To aid the developers, the company has come out with Developer Preview 3 of the Android XR SDK that provides early access to the tools needed for creating augmented and AI-powered experiences. Companies like Uber and GetYourGuide have already signed up as partners.

A Future of Flawless AI-Integrated Wearables

By the time the smart glasses are ready, Google would have made it possible for AI, XR, and everyday life to coexist more smoothly than ever. The glasses will be a quiet and effective technology that has the ability to provide real-time information, AI-powered discussions with Gemini, hands-free support, or instantaneous translations.
