Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis said Thursday that Google is developing an AI system to handle email tasks on Gmail, including sorting messages, drafting replies and highlighting items that need attention. Speaking at a technology conference in London, Hassabis outlined plans for an “AI supermail” that could reduce Gmail clutter and reshape how users manage their inboxes.

Hassabis noted that Gmail already includes AI features such as automated summaries and smart replies, but he suggested the company is working on a more advanced model behind the scenes. “Can we have a next-generation email?” Hassabis asked on the sidelines of the event. He added that he would be willing to pay to make email “disappear” as a manual task, hinting that the new service may include a subscription fee to support data-center costs.

According to Hassabis, the forthcoming system will analyze user patterns to deliver personalized responses. It aims to flag critical messages, draft context-appropriate replies and minimize time spent on routine email sorting. While some features are already live, including AI-generated summaries, Hassabis said the improved model will go further by fully managing routine tasks and only surfacing items that require direct user input.

The Google DeepMind chief acknowledged potential privacy concerns, noting that the AI will need to review user emails to function effectively. He emphasized that safeguards are under consideration to protect user data, though he did not disclose specific technical details. “Privacy is a core issue,” Hassabis said. “We want to ensure that users retain control over their data while benefiting from automated assistance.”

Industry analysts say the move could reduce reliance on manual Gmail use and pave the way for fee-based email services. Google has experimented with AI in Gmail since late 2024, adding features like Smart Compose and auto-categorization of promotional messages. The new AI supermail could represent the company’s most ambitious effort yet to integrate generative AI into daily communication tools.

Hassabis did not provide a release date for the system but indicated it could roll out within the next year. He said Google plans to pilot the service with a limited user base before expanding globally. If successful, the AI supermail could shift the email landscape by offering a hands-free approach to inbox management and setting new expectations for email convenience.
