WhatsApp is testing a new feature that enables users to create personalized AI chatbots. This update, currently rolling out to selected Android beta testers via version 2.25.18.4 on Google Play, lets individuals design AI companions tailored to specific roles and personalities.
The tool, dubbed “Create an AI,” lets users customize everything from the chatbot’s function to its conversational style and visual avatar. Earlier seen in development builds, the feature aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to embed AI-powered tools within its messaging platforms, including Instagram and Messenger through Meta’s AI Studio.
Users can define their AI chatbot’s purpose, whether as a productivity assistant, language coach, wellness companion, or simply a conversational partner. The setup process involves providing a description of the desired chatbot role using prompts up to 1,000 characters. WhatsApp then suggests personality profiles and role templates for easy selection.
Customization extends to tone and style, with options like calm, energetic, or motivational voices. An avatar can be chosen from suggested designs or generated via text prompts. Additionally, users can assign a unique tagline to encapsulate the chatbot’s intended function.
Once configured, the chatbot can remain private for individual use or be shared through a link with friends, groups, or social media platforms. This sharing capability allows, for example, language learners to distribute chatbots in study groups or productivity bots among colleagues.
The feature is still in beta, and while Meta has not confirmed when it will be available globally, the rollout is expected to expand in the coming weeks, according to reports from WABetaInfo.
