Adobe Adds OpenAI, Google AI Models to Firefly App

Adobe on Thursday announced the integration of external AI image-generation models from OpenAI and Alphabet's Google into its Firefly application, expanding its features and making it accessible on mobile platforms.

This move enables users to work with a broader set of AI tools, including OpenAI's image generator, Google's Imagen 3, Veo 2, and Flux 1.1 Pro, in addition to Adobe's proprietary Firefly model. The integration is designed to enhance creative workflows by giving users flexible model choices for different stages of their projects.

The company emphasized that Firefly continues to offer commercially safe content generation, which remains critical for users deploying AI-created assets in production. Adobe's CTO of digital media, Ely Greenfield, explained that while Firefly remains the preferred tool for content bound for commercial use, many users are interested in testing external models during ideation phases.

Adobe also confirmed upcoming plans to add more third-party model providers, including fal.ai, Luma, and Runway. These additions are part of Adobe's broader strategy to diversify its AI offerings within Firefly.

Users can employ the same credit-based payment system for both Adobe and third-party AI models within Firefly. Although the firm has not revealed revenue-sharing details with external model providers, the functionality allows generated content to seamlessly transfer into applications like Photoshop.

Since 2023, Adobe has focused on building its own AI solutions while maintaining openness to integrating third-party technologies. The latest expansion aligns with that approach, offering a mix of in-house and external tools while prioritizing content safety and user flexibility.
