Significance of Amavasya and Diwali Traditions

Hinduism considers Amavasya, the new moon night, not merely as a dark night but as one that is spiritually illuminated. One of the reasons for it is the mythological story of Lord Rama who returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana on the night of Amavasya and was welcomed by the people of Ayodhya with oil lamps thus the whole of India celebrates this event by lighting lamps and this practice has been extended to Diwali marking the victory of light over darkness and of good over evil.

Across the country families clean and beautify their homes, light the little lamps and do Lakshmi puja for the wealth and prosperity at home. Besides, Diwali also brings out the human side in us by being kind and generous and sharing with the needy that much so that many give food, clothes, and money as their bit to help the less fortunate.

The different regions of India all have their own ways of interpreting the Diwali festival:

  • North India Regards it as the event of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya.
  • West IndiaFavors it as Goddess Lakshmi’s day and business to start in new locations.
  • East IndiaLinks it with Kali Puja.
  • South India Entitles it as the festival of Lord Krishna, who conquered Narakasura.
