Unveiling of the World's Tallest Dr B.R.Ambedkar Statue

On January 20, 2024, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy inaugurated the world's tallest statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, in a momentous occasion that sent shockwaves across India. At 125 feet tall and set atop an 81-foot pedestal in Swaraj Maidan, Vijayawada, the aptly called "Statue of Social Justice" is a towering symbol of hope and a prime example of India's ongoing pursuit of equality.

Beyond being an immense engineering feat, the statue represents Jagan's steadfast dedication to promoting social justice and improving the conditions of marginalized groups. Speaking at the "Samajika Samatha Sankalpa Sabha" prior to the grand reveal, Reddy underscored the deep importance of the statue. He proclaimed it as a symbol of empowerment for Dalits, disadvantaged communities, minorities, and women throughout India—an actual representation of their dreams for a society devoid of bias and discrimination.

Jagan highlighted his government's unwavering dedication to advancing social justice and strengthening rural self-governance (Grama Swaraj). He emphasized the open execution of many welfare programs meant to empower vulnerable communities like minorities, economically disadvantaged groups, Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes. By reducing the gaps that exist between underserved communities and the mainstream, these programs—which include financial aid and educational efforts—aim to promote a society that is more equitable and inclusive.

"Despite the passage of 133 years since Dr. Ambedkar's birth and 66 years since his demise, the Chief Minister emphasized the enduring relevance and inspirational nature of his ideals and philosophy. Expressing concern, he pointed out that discriminatory practices persist in various forms even after 77 years of independence, highlighting the pressing need for ongoing endeavors to establish a genuinely equitable society."

The magnificent sculpture not only attracts attention with its striking physical presence but also makes a strong statement. It is a monument honoring Dr. Ambedkar's unwavering belief in the intrinsic equality of every person and serving as a symbol of his relentless support of human rights and dignity. The construction of the statue, which cost ₹404.35 crore in total and took up 18.81 acres, required meticulous planning and significant funding.

Crafted from 400 million tonnes of steel and 120 million tonnes of bronze, the monument's grandeur is further enhanced by its intricate details. The 85-foot pedestal, designed as a "Kalachakra Maha Mandal" from Buddhist architecture, features pink sandstone sourced from Rajasthan, adding a touch of traditional elegance to the contemporary structure.

The surrounding area of the "Statue of Social Justice" has been transformed into a vibrant space for reflection and celebration. Six water bodies grace the forecourt, symbolizing the cleansing power of social justice and the hope for a more equitable future. A three-sided peripheral water body adorns the pedestal building, creating a mesmerizing reflection of the towering statue. A captivating musical fountain adds a touch of magic to the ambiance, further enriching the visitor experience.

For those seeking deeper insights into Ambedkar's life and legacy, LED screens have been installed showcasing his remarkable journey. A 2,000-seater convention center and a food court complete the picture, making the complex a hub for education, engagement, and community gatherings, fostering dialogue and understanding around issues of social justice.

The entire property has been carefully adorned with lovely flowering plants and appealing marble walkways, skillfully designed by professionals from Delhi. The thorough focus on every detail guarantees that the "Statue of Social Justice" is more than just a monument; it stands as a dynamic symbol of Andhra Pradesh's dedication to constructing a fair and impartial society.
