Veteran actor‑politician and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan formally entered Parliament on July 25, 2025, as he took oath as a Member of the Rajya Sabha—choosing to deliver it in Tamil, his mother tongue, which earned enthusiastic table‑thumps and applause from fellow MPs.
Haasan’s nomination came with the political backing of the DMK-led INDIA alliance, as part of a strategic support pact during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. His seat was secured through a consensus, resulting in his unopposed election on June 12, with official election certification issued by returning officers in Chennai.
He filed his nomination on June 6 at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, accompanied by CM M.K. Stalin, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, and other alliance leaders including Thol. Thirumavalavan, Vaiko, and Selvaperunthagai, underscoring the DMK–MNM political tie-up.
At 69 years old, Haasan called the moment deeply meaningful, stating outside Parliament: “I am very proud and honoured.” Earlier, he expressed his intent to uphold national duty and represent Tamil voices in the Upper House.
This tenure paves the way for his first formal legislative role at the national level, with his term set from July 25, 2025 to July 24, 2031. He joins a cohort of newly appointed MPs from Tamil Nadu, including Poet Salma (DMK), S.R. Sivalingam (DMK), P. Wilson (DMK), and AIADMK’s I.S. Inbadurai and Dhanapal.
Kamal Haasan’s entry into the Rajya Sabha represents a significant chapter in his transition from cinema to national politics. Choosing to take his oath in Tamil symbolises his commitment to regional pride and cultural identity. His nomination underscores the evolving dynamics of Tamil Nadu politics and the strategic value of MNM's alliance with DMK at the national level.
