Hyderabad: A tense atmosphere was reported at the DGP office in Hyderabad on Tuesday as activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attempted to breach the premises in protest of a party candidate's suicide during the Mukthal municipal elections.
The party members pushed against barricades in their rush towards the office. When the police intervened to halt their advance, a confrontation ensued between them. Ultimately, the police took measures to disperse the protesting activists, relocating them to a nearby police station.
The BJP leadership has accused the Minister for Fisheries, Vakiti Srihari, of creating an environment of harassment that they claim contributed to the suicide of their candidate, Mahadevappa, during the election.
In a separate statement, DGP Shivdhar Reddy confirmed that a report has been filed regarding the suicide of the BJP candidate in Maktal. He indicated that an investigation is currently underway and noted that Mahadevappa had not left behind a suicide note. In the Maktal town centre, it was announced by Election Officer Sriram that the election for Ward 6 has been temporarily canceled due to the passing of the BJP candidate. Furthermore, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar addressed the situation by asserting that Mahadevappa's death should not be classified as suicide but rather as a murder orchestrated by the Congress party. He accused Congress leaders of resorting to threats and intimidation out of fear of losing in the municipal elections.
Bandi Sanjay declared that the BJP intends to initiate a campaign against the Congress following the municipal elections, stating, "BJP activists have a longstanding record of resisting the oppression imposed by the BRS. The moment has arrived when the BJP will work towards dismantling the Congress government.
