Kurnool: Taking strong exception to a report in a vernacular daily on roaring business being made by private diagnostic labs due to woefully inadequate facilities for clinical investigations at Kurnool Government General Hospital, Andhra Pradesh Lokayukta Justice P Lakshmana Reddy on Monday directed the Director of Medical Education and SP of Kurnool to conduct ‘confidential’ probe into the allegations and submit a report by June 25.
It also directed Kurnool District Collector, who is also the chairman of General Hospital Development Committee to take prompt action to end unethical practices by some agents and private labs. In a suo moto order, the Lokayukta directed the authorities to improve the existing lab facilities, explore setting up one at casualty itself and taking the support of NGOs and donors.
The report stated that due to poor facilities and vested interests, most of the poor patients out of 2,500 to 3,000 who visit the major government hospital in the region, approach the nearby private labs and get the tests done by paying a heavy amount.
