Jewar Airport: A strategic leap for India’s skies

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Noida International Airport at Jewar on March 28, marking a historic milestone for Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and the nation.

Just days away from this grand launch, the airport, popularly known as Jewar Airport, will commence operations as India's newest and one of its most ambitious aviation hubs. Located in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, approximately 75 km from Delhi, this greenfield facility is poised to become the second major airport serving the National Capital Region (NCR).

With its inauguration, India takes a significant leap toward addressing the growing demands of its rapidly expanding aviation industry. The Noida International Airport (IATA: DXN) has been developed in phases, with Phase 1 ready to handle 12 million passengers annually.

It features a 3,900-metre runway capable of supporting up to 30 aircraft movements per hour, and a state-of-the-art terminal spanning 100,000 square metres, equipped with 48 check-in counters, 10 aerobridges, nine immigration lanes, and advanced security systems. Cargo terminals are fully operational, and the airport will initially handle both domestic and international flights.

Low-cost carriers like IndiGo (the launch airline), Akasa Air, and Air India Express are gearing up to operate from here, connecting key cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and more. In the long term, the airport aims to scale up to 70 million passengers per annum across multiple phases, eventually featuring multiple runways and positioning itself as one of Asia's largest aviation gateways, an ambition that, if realised, could redefine India’s aviation map.

It goes without saying that central to this transformative project has been the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Under his governance, the airport has moved from planning to reality at a notably swift pace. He has personally inspected the site multiple times, reviewing progress on the domestic terminal, security arrangements, traffic management, and inauguration preparations.

He has chaired high-level meetings, directing officials to ensure quality, timeliness, and zero laxity in execution. It was he who formally invited Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate the airport on March 28, underscoring the state's commitment to this landmark.

Yogi Adityanath’s role extends beyond oversight. The airport embodies his "Triple S" model—Safety, Stability, and Speed—which has come to define Uttar Pradesh's development narrative in recent years. By prioritising infrastructure like the Jewar project, his government has actively sought to attract global partners and investors.

Plans for a "Singapore City" near the airport, complete with world-class logistics and investor-friendly ecosystems along the Yamuna Expressway, reflect an ambitious vision of transforming aviation hubs into broader economic engines—though, as with all such mega-plans, execution will ultimately determine success.

Land acquisition for the project, executed with sensitivity toward affected families by offering employment options alongside compensation, reflects a more people-centric approach than traditionally seen in large infrastructure projects. Yogi Ji has positioned Jewar not just as an airport but as a symbol of Uttar Pradesh's resurgence—a “turning point in its aviation history” that aims to propel the state from laggard to leader in India's growth story.

His hands-on involvement, including recent inspections just days before the launch, has ensured that regulatory clearances, safety protocols, and operational readiness were fast-tracked without compromising standards, an approach that deserves both recognition and continued scrutiny.

This development is not merely an addition to infrastructure; it is a strategic response to the crippling congestion at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, which has long exceeded its designed capacity.

“I feel that by providing a modern alternative, Noida International Airport will decongest NCR's skies, reduce delays, and enhance passenger experience. India's aviation sector has been on a rapid growth trajectory, with domestic passenger traffic surging post-pandemic and international connectivity expanding,” says Ajit Dubey, an aviation sector expert.

It is expected to generate employment on a massive scale, stimulate regional economies, and enhance connectivity for millions, benefits that extend far beyond aviation alone.
