Indian Railways is set to redefine overnight long-distance travel with the launch of its first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, which will operate between Guwahati and Howrah from January. Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that all trials, testing and certification have been completed, and the inaugural service will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month.

Designed specifically for overnight journeys, the Vande Bharat Sleeper aims to combine speed, comfort and safety, marking a significant milestone in India’s rail modernisation drive.

Boost for Northeast and North Bengal connectivity

The new service is expected to improve rail connectivity across key districts of Assam and West Bengal. In Assam, it will benefit Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon, while in West Bengal it will serve Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah—strengthening links for North Bengal, Siliguri and the wider Northeast region.

With road travel to Kolkata often time-consuming and air connectivity limited, especially from North Bengal and eastern Assam, the sleeper Vande Bharat offers a faster and more comfortable alternative for overnight travel.

Premium configuration and modern amenities

The 16-coach rake has been designed for long-distance operations and can accommodate around 823 passengers. Its configuration includes:

11 AC three-tier coaches

4 AC two-tier coaches

1 First Class AC coach

Passengers will have access to modern sleeper berths, advanced suspension systems, automatic doors, contemporary toilets, fire detection and safety monitoring systems, CCTV-based surveillance, digital passenger information displays and energy-efficient technologies—bringing premium train travel to overnight routes.

Symbolic shift and strategic importance

Placing the development in a broader context, current affairs commentator Sandip Ghose noted that Kolkata was historically the gateway to North Bengal and the Northeast, before improved rail and air links shifted the focus towards Delhi. With Siliguri now emerging as a major commercial hub, the sleeper Vande Bharat represents a step towards reviving traditional eastward connectivity.

He described the move as both practical and symbolic, aligning with the government’s Look East vision, where a developed West Bengal and Northeast form key pillars. The service, Ghose added, is likely to feature prominently in the Prime Minister’s outreach in West Bengal and Assam ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Overnight travel with a regional flavour

The Vande Bharat Sleeper timetable will be structured for evening departures and early-morning arrivals, making it ideal for long-distance commuters. Adding a cultural touch, onboard catering will feature Assamese cuisine on services originating from Guwahati and traditional Bengali dishes on trains starting from Kolkata.

Together, speed, comfort and regional identity make the Vande Bharat Sleeper a significant upgrade for rail travel between Siliguri, the Northeast and eastern India’s largest metropolis.
