Well, if yes, then here’s some exciting news for you!

A recent study has found that adopting a dietary approach known as the "Planetary Health Diet," alongside elements of the Mediterranean Diet, is one of the best ways to achieve a long and healthy life.

The term "Planetary Health Diet" was introduced by the EAT-Lancet Commission in their 2019 report, "Food in the Anthropocene: the EAT-Lancet Commission on healthy diets from sustainable food systems." This commission, made up of 37 experts from 16 countries, was a collaborative effort involving the non-profit organization EAT and the medical journal The Lancet. The Planetary Health Diet focuses on a dietary pattern that supports both human health and environmental sustainability, highlighting the need to increase our intake of plant-based foods while cutting back on animal-based products.

Meanwhile, the Mediterranean Diet continues to hold its position as a champion in the realm of longevity. This diet, which emphasizes seasonal fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, and olive oil—along with lean proteins and limited red meat—has long been linked to lowered risks of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

The study reinforces these findings: participants who adhered closely to this dietary combination experienced a 21% reduction in their risk of death throughout the study period.

Both diets promote overall wellness, but researchers identified four key components associated with reduced mortality risk: fruits, dairy, unsaturated oils, and nuts. Conversely, minimizing the consumption of sugary sodas and pastries also played a significant role in lowering the risk of early death.

The research followed over 11,000 adults, averaging 47.5 years old, for more than 14 years. Participants were evaluated based on their adherence to both the Planetary Health Diet and the Mediterranean Diet. By the end of the monitoring period, over 1,100 participants had passed away—but those who closely followed these diets had a noticeably lower risk.

Individuals who ranked in the top third for adherence to the Planetary Health Diet enjoyed a 22% lower mortality risk, while those committed to the Mediterranean Diet experienced a 21% decrease.
