Mumbai, Ma 25: MLC Satyajeet Tambe on Tuesday demanded that property taxes be waived for homes up to 1500 sq ft. While speaking at the Legislative Council, Tambe stated that high property taxes put a financial burden on citizens and the government should act at the earliest to provide relief. Notably, Minister Uday Samant responded positively and assured a meeting would be conducted to discuss the possibility.

"Property tax has become a major financial burden for citizens, particularly in large cities across Maharashtra. With inflation already straining household budgets, additional taxes like property tax increase financial stress," Tambe said.

At present, homes up to 600 sq. ft. are exempt from property tax, while a 50% concession is provided for homes between 600 and 1000 sq. ft. Tambe urged the government to extend full exemption to homes up to 1500 sq. ft. and provide a 50% concession for homes between 1500 and 2000 sq. ft.

Tambe said the tax waiver would be a responsible step by the government. "Many families purchase homes with their hard-earned money, but high tax slabs make it difficult to sustain their finances. A tax exemption would provide significant relief to middle-class and working-class citizens," Tambe stated.

Minister Uday Samant welcomed Tambe’s proposal and stated that a policy decision would be required to implement the exemption. "However, a meeting will soon be conducted to discuss the possibility of waiving property tax for homes up to 1500 sq. ft.," he said.

Tambe also raised the issue of 3,964 unauthorized residential properties in Sangamner. He pointed out that these homes are purely residential and not used for commercial purposes, making it unjust to impose property tax on their owners. Considering this, he urged the government to grant them a full waiver on property tax.
