On Tuesday, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) unveiled a set of 22 brand-new Electric Green Metro Express buses in Hyderabad. The event saw the presence of prominent figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, and R&B Minister Komati Reddy Venkat Reddy, who jointly inaugurated the buses alongside Transport Commissioner Jyoti Buddha Prakash, TSRTC Managing Director VC Sajjanar, and other dignitaries.

This marks a significant milestone, as it's the first time such eco-friendly electric non-AC buses have been introduced in the state. These buses, part of the Mahalakshmi scheme, promise a greener mode of transportation for the people of Hyderabad.

Each of these buses can accommodate up to 35 passengers. What's impressive is their capability to travel up to 225 kilometres on a single charge. Recharging them fully requires only 3 to 4 hours, making them efficient and convenient for daily use.

In line with its commitment to providing eco-friendly transportation options, TSRTC has been operating 40 AC e-buses since March 2019, transporting approximately 5000 passengers daily from various locations in Hyderabad to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGI). These buses have been instrumental in promoting pollution-free e-mobility in the city.

TSRTC has also partnered with M/s. Evey Trans (TEL) P Ltd., to introduce 50 12-metre Intra-city AC eBuses on a GCC Model for a duration of 12 years. Additionally, they have already deployed 10 e-Garuda buses on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada route since May 2023, along with 25 Green Metro Luxury AC eBuses on the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and IT corridor routes since September 2023.

The upcoming plans of TSRTC are ambitious, with another 25 vehicles ready for operation and a remaining 450 buses set to be introduced by August 2024. This signals a significant shift towards sustainable and environmentally friendly public transportation in Hyderabad, setting an example for other cities to follow suit.
