US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Monday said the next round of discussions on the crucial India–US trade deal will take place on January 13, underlining Washington’s intent to deepen economic and strategic engagement with New Delhi.
Speaking shortly after formally assuming charge as ambassador, Gor said trade remains a priority but is not the only area of cooperation. “The trade deal is important, but we will also continue to work closely on other issues,” he said, signaling a broader agenda for bilateral ties.
Emphasising the strong personal rapport between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gor said, “Trump’s friendship with Modi is real. Real friends can disagree, but they always resolve differences.” His remarks come amid renewed momentum in negotiations that have faced delays in the past.
Expressing optimism about the future of the partnership, Gor said he arrived in India with a clear mandate. “It’s great to be here as the US ambassador to India. I come with a mission to take the India–US partnership to the next level,” he said, adding that a presidential visit could be on the horizon. “Hopefully, President Trump will visit India in a year or two.”
The ambassador also referred to strategic initiatives such as Pax Silica, describing it as a US-led framework in which India plays a key role. Acknowledging the complexities of ongoing negotiations, he said both sides remain committed. “It’s not easy to cross the finish line, but we are determined,” he noted.
Echoing the focus on balanced engagement, US Senator Marco Rubio said, “This year will be a year of reciprocity,” highlighting the shared intent to strengthen cooperation across trade, technology, and strategic sectors.
