New Delhi: Housing in Telangana’s rural areas is likely to receive a big boost with the Centre agreeing to implement the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) from this fiscal.

This is in response to the new State government under the Congress desiring to opt for PMAY-G. It may be mentioned here that the previous government under the BRS had turned it back on PMAY-G, which was introduced by the Centre on April 1, 2016. The incumbent Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has reversed this policy.

In fact, the Reddy government has informed the Centre that PMAY-G is very high on its priority list. The Union Ministry of Rural Development has agreed in principle to accede to the request of the Telangana government, official sources told Bizz Buzz. The announcement of the rollout, however, will have to wait till the formation of the new government at the Centre.

In her Interim Budget speech this year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on February 1, “Despite the challenges due to Covid, implementation of PM Awas Yojana (Grameen) continued and we are close to achieving the target of three crore houses. Two crore more houses will be taken up in the next five years to meet the requirement arising from increase in the number of families.”

The Ministry of Rural Development will identify the intended beneficiaries who have been left behind, the sources said, adding that the Telangana government wants 1.57 lakh houses to be built under PMAY-G.

Under PMAY-G, beneficiaries get Rs1.2 lakh in plain areas and Rs1.3 lakh in hilly states (including North-eastern States and UTs of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh), difficult areas, and Integrated Action Plan (IAP) districts as financial assistance. They also get an additional assistance of Rs 12,000 for the construction of toilets through convergence with Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin (SBM-G), Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), or any other dedicated source of funding, according to an earlier official release.

The PMAY-G households are also provided water, LPG, and electricity connections in convergence with other relevant schemes.
