Kolkata: Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi landed in Kolkata on Saturday, igniting immense excitement among fans as the GOAT India Tour 2025 commenced. The City of Joy witnessed a pre-dawn frenzy as thousands gathered outside the airport to catch a glimpse of the World Cup winner.

Messi arrived from Miami via Dubai, and despite the late hour, supporters thronged the airport perimeter waving Argentina flags and chanting his name. Police established a tight security cordon to manage the enthusiastic crowds. “There’s a great atmosphere of joy that Messi is coming to India after 14 years,” said tour organiser Satadru Dutta. “Football’s connection to India is growing again. Never before have so many sponsors come to Indian football.”

Fans Wait Hours for Messi

Many fans, who had arrived well before the superstar’s flight landed, described the experience as surreal. “We have been waiting for two hours. If needed, we will wait for even four. We can’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” a fan told ANI. Another fan called the night “truly magical,” adding, “He’s a magician, the GOAT. We’re here just to catch a glimpse. Love you, Messi.”

Three-City Tour

Messi’s three-day India tour will take him to Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

Packed Schedule in Kolkata

Messi’s Kolkata engagements begin with a private meet-and-greet from 9:30 to 10:30 am for select guests and organisers. He will then virtually inaugurate a statue dedicated to him, a gesture reflecting the city’s admiration for the football icon.

The highlight for fans comes later in the day, with a friendly match at Yuva Bharati Stadium, where thousands are expected to fill the stands. The day will conclude with a fan interaction programme at the same venue.

Tickets for the events were made available through the District app, starting at Rs 4,500. Demand was extremely high, with most categories selling out quickly, as Kolkata gears up for one of its biggest football celebrations in years.
