Ashes 2025–26: Usman Khawaja replaces Steve Smith, scores fluent 82 in third Test
Usman Khawaja returned to Australia’s Test XI with a fluent 82 after Steve Smith was ruled out due to illness in the third Ashes Test.
Usman Khawaja plays a shot during his composed 82 on Day 1 of the third Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval.

Usman Khawaja made his mark in the Test XI as he came back and took Smith's place who was ill at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday and scored a remarkable 82.
Khawaja's inclusion in the playing eleven was due to Smith having dizziness and being ruled out of the match. This was revealed by the Australian captain Pat Cummins after winning the toss and opting to bat.
“Steve is feeling unwell and has headed home. We’re fortunate to have someone like Uzzie ready to step in,” Cummins said, as quoted by the ICC.
The 38-year-old southpaw did not waste the chance and played a steady innings of 82 runs which was the backbone of Australia’s batting on Day 1. Khawaja was a part of the series’ first Test match but scored only two runs in the first innings and did not get to bat in the second.
Steve Smith’s health update
Steve Smith is now targeting a return for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. According to the Australian team management, the former skipper is being treated for a “potential vestibular issue” related to the inner ear, ruling out any concussion concerns.
“He was assessed and monitored closely and was close to being available to play. However, given the persistence of symptoms, a decision was made not to proceed,” the team said in an official statement.
Australia will continue to monitor Smith’s condition ahead of the crucial upcoming fixtures in the Ashes series.
