Sonam Wangchuk ends 21 day hunger strike for Ladakh's statehood

Climate activist and education reformer, Sonam Wangchuk, concluded his 21-day hunger strike advocating for Ladakh's statehood and the preservation of its delicate Himalayan ecosystem. Despite ending his fast, Wangchuk reiterated his commitment to continue fighting for Ladakh's constitutional safeguards and the political rights of its people.

The hunger strike, initiated on March 6 by Wangchuk, attracted widespread attention, with thousands gathering across the Union Territory in support. Following Wangchuk's decision to end his fast, women's groups in Ladakh have declared their intention to commence a hunger strike, pressing for similar demands.

Wangchuk's resolve during the hunger strike was firm, emphasizing the importance of constitutional protections for Ladakh and the preservation of its unique indigenous cultures. In a video message posted earlier, Wangchuk urged the Union government, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, to address the concerns raised by the people of Ladakh.

Despite facing harsh conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, Wangchuk remained resolute, urging government officials to demonstrate integrity and foresight in addressing Ladakh's issues. The activist's plea for conscientious governance resonated widely, emphasizing the need for political leadership to transcend mere politics and exhibit statesmanship.

Ladakh, comprising the Leh and Kargil districts, attained the status of a separate Union Territory following the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019. However, discontent has simmered in the region, with protests escalating earlier this year as demands for statehood and protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution gained momentum.

Despite the formation of a high-level committee by the Centre to address these demands, negotiations have yet to yield significant progress. Following a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah, during which the demands were reportedly rejected, Wangchuk commenced his hunger strike in Leh.

Wangchuk's dedication to the cause has drawn widespread support, with notable figures like actor Prakash Raj expressing solidarity. As Ladakh's quest for constitutional safeguards and political rights continues, Wangchuk's unwavering determination serves as a poignant reminder of the region's aspirations for equitable representation and environmental preservation.
