To commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of one of India's most admired independence warriors, the governments of Punjab and Haryana have formally announced a school vacation for July 31, 2025, in observance of Shaheed Udham Singh Jayanti.
📅 The Significance of July 31 as Shaheed Udham Singh Martyrdom Day
A symbol of defiance against colonial oppression, Shaheed Udham Singh was put to death in London on July 31, 1940. He was found guilty of killing Michael O'Dwyer, the Punjab's previous lieutenant governor, as payback for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. Every year, people commemorate his sacrifice with strong national feelings, particularly in northern areas like Punjab and Haryana.
On July 31, 2025, Punjab will declare a public holiday.
The Punjab government has formally announced that July 31 will be a public holiday in honour of Udham Singh's death. A number of government agencies will also stay closed, as will all public and private schools in the state. Punjabi educational institutions have been urged to plan awareness-raising events in the run-up to the vacation.
On Udham Singh Jayanti, Haryana also announces the closure of schools.
The Haryana government, like Punjab, has announced a school holiday for the same day. In order to encourage students and educators to consider Udham Singh's legacy and take part in memorial events, all public and private schools in the state will be closed on July 31.
