The Supreme Court will hear a series of petitions on Wednesday challenging the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan, is scheduled to examine the legal challenges raised against the law passed earlier this month.
A total of 10 petitions have been filed questioning the constitutional basis of the amendment. Among the petitioners are AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, AAP’s Amanatullah Khan, civil rights organizations, and various religious and political leaders including Arshad Madani, Anjum Kadari, Mohammad Shafi, Mohammed Fazlurrahim, and RJD’s Manoj Kumar Jha.
In addition, fresh petitions from TMC MP Mahua Moitra and SP’s Zia-ur-Rahman Barq are expected to be listed shortly.
Parallel to the opposition, six BJP-governed states — Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Assam — have submitted interventions in support of the amendment. Haryana highlighted the need for streamlined governance of waqf properties and called for immediate reform.
Meanwhile, incidents linked to the legislation have stirred unrest. In Assam’s Cachar district, seven individuals were arrested following a protest march against the amendment. The demonstration, held without official clearance, escalated into violence. Authorities imposed prohibitory orders in response.
At a gathering in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed concerns about unrest in Murshidabad district. She dismissed claims linking TMC to violence, asserting the party’s leading stance against the legislation in Parliament.
The hearings are slated to begin at 2 PM, as per the court’s cause list. The outcome could have a broad impact on the future framework governing waqf property management nationwide.
