An Instagram post that brings to light a Bengaluru Rapido driver who is doing several jobs to increase his income has gone viral on the internet. The post, which the copywriter Komal Porwal shared, tells the driver’s story of earning about Rs 1 lakh a month through a mix of jobs.

Porwal narrates that she came across the driver during a Sunday night ride when it was already around 9 p.m. Their talk started off as small talk but soon divulged the range of his responsibilities. The driver’s narrative, contrary to the prevalent notion about modern work ethics, was a tale of loyalty and toughness.

When Porwal inquired about his primary job, he told her he was working for Swiggy in the morning, driving for Rapido at night, and then selling street food at a stall with his brother over the weekend. “It’s a bit more hard work, ma’am, but my household runs happily,” he said to her, indicating that the extra effort is indeed worth the stability of the family.

Porwal remarked that she found it amazing how he could juggle three sources of income at the same time. She mentioned that his total income in a month is about ₹1 lakh.

The post went viral on social media almost immediately, gathering thousands of likes and comments. Numerous people appreciated the tale for presenting the daily struggle which is usually not considered in society.

One commenter expressed that, “Coming out of our comfort zone shows us stories that we would not have met otherwise.” Another commented, “Happy and optimistic people are more likely to juggle work and life, while the money-motivated ones face stress and develop unhealthy habits.”

Certain social media users placed the driver’s commitment side by side with the corporate world. One user brought this up by sharing a story of a cab driver whom he/she/they had met and who had been told not to speak to the passengers anymore, arguing that this was a clear case of differences in work culture. Another user jokingly replied, “That’s a lot more than 90% of the workforce in the Indian corporate sector.”

Porwal’s tweet raises questions about criticizing the workforce of new generation as lazy and seeking the easy way out. Quite the contrary, he revealed that sheer persistence and hard work of a multitude of people is what keeps their families alive.
