PPL will continue to fight for copyrights of songs, music

The Bombay High Court's decision sends a clear message about the importance of respecting intellectual property rights and sets a precedent for future legal deliberations in the evolving landscape of copyright law

Mumbai: Ina significant legal development with regard to Ramada Hotel in Lucknow, Bombay High Court has issued an ad-interim injunction against the unauthorized playing of copyrighted songs without a license during the proposed New Year 2024 Eve.

This pivotal decision comes in response to an interim application filed by Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL), a leading player in the music licensing industry.

The court, in its ruling, acknowledged that the larger issue surrounding the applicability of Section 30 of the Copyright Act to PPL in the ongoing suit is yet to be determined. This underscores the complex legal landscape within which PPL is navigating to protect its intellectual property rights.

The interim application revealed that the defendants were planning to communicate to the public the repertoire of sound recordings owned by PPL during the upcoming New Year's Eve event at Ramada Hotel. PPL had filed the suit, alleging potential copyright infringement and unauthorized public performance of its sound recordings during this high-profile occasion. The injunction serves as a prelude to the larger legal battle that PPL is undertaking to establish the scope and applicability of copyright laws in the digital age. PPL remains resolute in its pursuit of protecting the interests of the creative community it represents.

Talking to Bizz Buzz, the MD & CEO of PPL India said, “We at PPL India, extend profound gratitude to the Delhi High Court and Bombay High Court for their resolute support in upholding the rights of copyright holders. These pivotal decisions underscore the paramount importance of preserving PPL's rights as the rightful owner of copyrights, without any encumbrances regarding its status as a copyright society.”

PPL India remains steadfast in its dedication to championing and protecting intellectual property rights assigned by its members, he added.

As the New Year approaches, this legal triumph reinforces PPL's dedication to ensuring fair compensation for artists and maintaining the integrity of the music industry. The Bombay High Court's decision sends a clear message about the importance of respecting intellectual property rights and sets a precedent for future legal deliberations in the evolving landscape of copyright law.
