Muft Bijli Yojana through PM Surya Ghar: Here’s a step-by-step process to apply for the new rooftop solar scheme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced the PM Surya Ghar – Muft Bijli Yojana – to offer free electricity to the customers applying for it. According to the Yojana (scheme), the central government will offer 300 units of free electricity every month to its beneficiaries by infusing ₹75,000 crores. This scheme is in line with the previous announcement of Nirmala Sitharaman (Finance Minister) in her interim budget speech on February 1.

The project, which plans to light up one crore households, intends to further the sustainable development vision of the government and the people’s well-being, according to a post by PM Modi on X. He also specified by saying that the Panchayats and urban local bodies will be incentivized to endorse the rooftop solar panels within their areas of jurisdiction. The scheme aims to lessen power bills, generate employment, and lead to more income.

What is the process to apply for PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana?

First of all, visit the authorized website of the scheme: pmsuryaghar.gov.in

Click on Apply

Register by giving entries such as consumer account number, state, district, and Power Distribution Company.

Click on ‘Apply for the Rooftop Solar’

After this, you need to wait until you get the approval from DISCOM. The approved ones can then install the solar panels by the registered vendors in your DISCOM.

Once installation is done, submit the plant specifics and apply for the net meter

Following this and the DISCOM’s inspection, you will have to generate a commissioning certificate from the website (portal).

After getting the commissioning certificate, you have to provide the bank account details along with a canceled cheque via the portal to get the subsidy in the next 30 days.

The government says that the scheme is likely to generate savings up to ₹15000-18000 crore every year for households from the newly launched project. Also, the savings are expected to be generated by the sale of the extras to the companies charging EVs.
