PM Modi Turns 75: 10 Landmark Campaigns That Shaped His Governance Since 2014

The occasion is observed on the 17th of September and is immersed in celebrations of Shri Narendra Modi's 75th birthday. It is also the day when in Madhya Pradesh, the Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar obtains a foothold, the 8th Rashtriya Poshan Maah begins, and when a number of foundation stones are laid and projects inaugurated.

We may say that, in a manner worthy of note, some key programmes and schemes were inaugurated by Shri Narendra Modi during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat (2001-2014), and in extension of these during his first, second, and third terms as the Prime Minister since 2014, thereby reshaping Indian governance. These campaigns touch on health, sanitation, women's empowerment, housing, environment, and financial inclusion—thereby directly affecting millions of people.

Some are 10 historic schemes and campaigns under PM Modi's leadership that have come to symbolize his mode of governance:

1. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (2014)

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: Launched on October 2, 2014, this campaign was cleanliness-oriented, with the sole objectives of abolishing open defecation and improving sanitation. One hundred million toilets were created, and more than 600,000 villages were given the title of open-defecation-free.

2. Aayushman Bharat Yojana (2018)

This health protection scheme provides cover for five lakh rupees per family per annum, thus becoming the world's largest government-sponsored healthcare scheme. More than 7 crore free hospital admissions have taken place under the scheme, paving the way for India's digital health mission.

3. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (2015)

Under this scheme, also called "Housing for All", affordable houses are being provided to urban and rural poor. Women and socially disadvantaged groups are given priority under the construction and purchase subsidy schemes.

4. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (2014)

This financial inclusion movement had led to the setting up of millions of bank accounts for the unbanked. Hence, it turned into the de facto third pillar of the Trinity-JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, Mobile) of direct cash benefits and thus helped in leakage prevention.

5. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (2016)

Starting out in Ballia in UP, this scheme aims to provide LPG connections to rural households to reduce health hazards that detergent usage for cooking would pose. So far, more than 9 crore connections have been distributed.

6. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (2015)

It is a campaign that stands against the declining child sex ratio and promotes girl child education. Campaigns were held to unite government agencies with civil society to raise awareness of the message, increase school enrolments, and sponsor gender equality.

7. Namami Gange Programme (2014)

Ganga Action Plan was the series of projects that aimed at restoring the river Ganga by treatment of sewage and control of pollution, along with community participation. It remains one of the biggest environmental sustainability projects in India.

8. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (2015)

It is a saving scheme for the girl child, carrying high-interest rates and tax benefits. Expenditure on the child's education and marriage must ensure financial security for girls after they reach the age of 18.

9. Lakhpati Didi Yojana (2023)

This is a land-based rural women empowerment scheme that gives skill training and entrepreneurship opportunities to SHGs so that at least one crore women start earning ₹1 lakh or more per annum.

10. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (2017)

It is a maternity benefit program under which ₹5,000 is paid, in instalments, to pregnant and lactating women for the first child, for the purpose of their better nutrition and healthcare.
