The goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's week-long diplomatic journey, which he started on Wednesday, is to deepen India's relationships with important allies in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Africa. During the trip, which will include stops in Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia, India will reiterate its commitment to multilateral forums like BRICS and work to strengthen collaboration within the Global South.

Prior to his departure, Prime Minister Modi spoke on India's founding membership in BRICS and reaffirmed the country's commitment to promoting a "peaceful, equitable, just, democratic, and balanced multipolar world order." According to him, the forthcoming BRICS conference in Rio de Janeiro would have a significant impact on emerging economies' priorities.

Developing Partnerships in Africa and the Caribbean

From July 2 to 3, the Prime Minister will make his first trip in Ghana, where he will meet with President John Dramani Mahama in a bilateral meeting. Modi referred to Ghana as a "valued partner in the Global South," emphasising the nation's significance in the African Union and ECOWAS. He is anticipated to speak to the Ghanaian Parliament about cooperation in fields like development partnerships, healthcare, energy, and investment.

After visiting Ghana, Modi will head to Trinidad & Tobago to meet with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Modi referred to the visit as a "special bond of ancestry and kinship." It takes place on the 180th anniversary of the entrance of Indian indentured labourers in the Caribbean nation. In addition, President Christine Carla Kangaloo, who was the Chief Guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas this year, will host important events.

A Momentous Trip to Argentina

The first time an Indian prime minister has visited Argentina bilaterally in 57 years, Modi will next travel to Buenos Aires. He will meet with President Javier Milei to talk about expanding collaboration in essential minerals, trade, agriculture, energy, technology, and tourism. Argentina is a significant G20 partner and a rising force in India's outreach to Latin America, Modi said.

In Brazil, concentrate on BRICS

PM Modi is expected to attend the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7, where he will meet with world leaders one-on-one. He will make the first state visit by an Indian prime minister in almost 60 years to Brasília following the summit. He will meet with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva there to continue the conversation about enhancing India-Brazil ties and growing cooperation in the Global South.

Namibia is the last stop.

On his way back, the Prime Minister will stop in Namibia to conclude the tour. Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the president-elect, will meet with him, and he will speak to a joint session of the Namibian parliament. In addition to highlighting India's long-time backing for Namibia's decolonisation efforts, Modi said the visit will honour "our enduring solidarity and shared commitment for freedom and development."

Strengthening South-South Collaboration

“As I embark on this journey, I am sure that my visits to these five countries will strengthen partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic, deepen India’s engagement across the Global South, and bolster cooperation through platforms like BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM,” Modi stated.

The tour is seen as part of India’s broader diplomatic push to cement its leadership role among emerging economies and deepen strategic and economic ties with key nations in Africa and Latin America.
