On the night of July 4, prominent Patna-based businessman and BJP leader Gopal Khemka was tragically shot dead while exiting his car near his apartment by the Gandhi Maidan grounds, close to the Panache Hotel. Police recovered a bullet and shell casing at the crime scene, and CCTV footage shows a bike-borne assailant opening fire before fleeing the area.
Khemka, who ran Magadh Hospital, multiple pharmacies, petrol pumps, and manufacturing units, was a well-known figure in Patna’s business community.. The manner of his death eerily mirrors the 2018 assassination of his son, Gunjan Khemka, who was also shot by unidentified assailants.
Patna’s Superintendent of Police Diksha Kumari confirmed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established under the SP (City Central) to lead the investigation. The police are examining the CCTV footage and are tracking all possible angles—including business rivalries and previous threats.
The murder has sparked immediate political outrage. Leaders from the RJD and BJP criticise Bihar’s law-and-order situation, accusing the state government under Nitish Kumar of failing to ensure public safety. Independent MP Pappu Yadav demanded stricter security measures in the wake of this killing.
