A large explosion swept through an ordnance factory in Maharashtra's Bhandara Friday morning, killing at least one worker and injuring several others, according to officials, who are attempting to identify six workers with specialist equipment.

The blast at the Jawahar Nagar factory at 10.30 AM was so severe that it could be heard up to 5 km distant, affecting adjacent communities.

Commenting on the incident, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said in a post on X, “Deeply saddened to know about the blast of the Ordnance Factory at Bhandara, Maharashtra. My condolences to the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. The rescue teams are deployed at the site. All efforts are being made to provide assistance to those who are affected.”

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in an X post, “It is unfortunate that one worker has lost their life. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. We are praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Rescue operations are being conducted with full support.”

According to the National Disaster Response Force, the explosion “resulted in a fire and subsequent building collapse."NDRF said 13 people were reported trapped at the site initially.

Sanjay Kolte, District Collector, Bhandara, confirmed that seven people have been rescued from the debris following the explosion at the ordnance factory.

“Rescue operations are ongoing. The roof collapsed during the explosion, and JCB machines are being used to clear the debris,” he added.
