The date for observing Muharram 2025 in India has been officially confirmed as Sunday, July 6, putting an end to confusion over whether the Islamic New Year would be marked on July 6 or July 7.
According to moon sighting reports, the new Hijri year began on June 27, following the sighting of the crescent moon on June 26. Consequently, Yaum-e-Ashura, the 10th and most significant day of Muharram, also falls on July 6, aligning with the scheduled government holiday in India.
Muharram and Its Significance
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds great religious significance for both Sunni and Shia Muslims. It marks a time of mourning and spiritual reflection, especially for Shia communities, as it commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala.
Ashura Observances
Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, marks the peak of mourning rituals. In Shia tradition, the day is remembered with solemn processions, featuring Tazia—elaborate, miniature replicas of Imam Hussain’s tomb. These symbolic structures are often handcrafted from bamboo and adorned with colourful paper, cloth, and lights. Families revere and display Tazias in their homes in the days leading up to Ashura, eventually carrying them to local cemeteries for burial on the day itself.
In contrast, Sunni Muslims observe the day through prayers, fasting, and Quran recitations, emphasizing spiritual devotion and remembrance.
Clarity on Holiday
The initial confusion surrounding the date of Muharram stemmed from varying moon sighting expectations, a common occurrence due to the lunar nature of the Islamic calendar. With the sighting confirmed, religious communities across India are now preparing for a day of reflection, reverence, and remembrance on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
