Mahavatar Narasimha Becomes Highest-Grossing Animated Film in India, Surpasses Spider-Man
Mahavatar Narasimha becomes India’s highest-grossing animated film, overtaking Spider-Man with ₹57 crore in just 8 days.
Mahavatar Narasimha crosses ₹57 crore at the Indian box office, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in the country.

Mahavatar Narasimha has made box office history by becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever in India, overtaking the previous record set by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The film earned approximately ₹8.50 crore on its second Friday, bringing its total domestic gross to ₹57 crore — excluding 3D surcharges. With those included, the total climbs to around ₹63 crore.
Produced by Hombale Pictures, Mahavatar Narasimha has broken past expectations, setting a new benchmark for animated films in the Indian market. The previous highest-grossing Indian animation was Kochadaiiyaan (2014), starring Rajinikanth, but Mahavatar Narasimha achieved this feat in just eight days, reflecting its widespread appeal and strong momentum.
A Game-Changer for Animation in India
While animation is a dominant genre globally — with recent global hits like China’s Ne Zha 2 and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 — the genre has traditionally struggled to gain a foothold in Indian cinema, often being dismissed as “kids’ entertainment.” However, Mahavatar Narasimha appears to be changing that narrative. Religious-themed animation, although niche, has found occasional success in India (Chaar Sahibzaade being a prime example), but never on such a pan-India scale.
This film marks the beginning of a larger cinematic universe, with six more films announced in the franchise. Its success could pave the way for a broader acceptance of Indian animation across demographics.
