Jyotiraditya Scindia: Apple to Produce All iPhones in India in Coming Years

While speaking at the Bharat Telecom event today, May 5, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that Apple will manufacture all iPhone’s in India in the upcoming years. As Apple is set to source and produce most iPhones sold in the US from India, Scindia said the investment in India is not just about goodwill, but a significant decision for every original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
Is production of the iPhone being shifted to India?
During the latest earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the majority of iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter will be sourced via India. However, China will cater to manufacture most of the Apple products for other global markets amid uncertainty over tax tariffs.
“For the June quarter, we expect a majority of the iPhones sold in the US to have India as their country of origin,” Cook said. He also noted that nearly all iPads, Macs, Apple Watches and AirPods for the US market will be sourced from Vietnam.
How much percentage of global iPhones are made in India?
According to Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Minister of State for Telecommunications, India has transitioned from being a major importer in 2014 to a leading mobile phone manufacturer and exporter.
“In 2014, India was producing only six million mobile phones and importing 210 million. Today, we produce 330 million mobile phones annually, with exports of 50 million units,” he said.
He added that about 15% of iPhones produced globally come from India. Apple shipped 232.1 million iPhones globally.
