Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) today. The oath taking ceremony was led by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The ceremony was attended by PM Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar among others.
With this, Justice Gavai has taken over from Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the Chief Justice of India and will serve a six-month tenure in the country’s top judicial post. Justice Khanna demitted office on Tuesday upon attaining the age of 65. He was also present at Justice Gavai's swearing-in ceremony.
A native of Amravati district in Maharashtra, Justice BR Gavai took the oath in Hindi. He has also become the first Buddhist and the second person from the Dalit community to take oath as the CJI.
Notably, Justice Gavai was part of a five-judge Constitution bench that upheld the Centre’s decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370, thereby revoking Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
