India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection for June 2025 stood at Rs 1.85 lakh crore, marking a 6.2% rise compared to June last year, according to the finance ministry data released Tuesday. Though lower than April’s record Rs 2.37 lakh crore and May’s Rs 2.01 lakh crore, GST revenues have doubled over the past five years.

For the fiscal year 2024-25, gross GST revenues reached a historic Rs 22.08 lakh crore, registering a 9.4% year-on-year growth from Rs 20.18 lakh crore in FY24. This is the highest annual revenue under India’s unified indirect tax system since GST was introduced in July 2017.

Experts note the mixed picture in June collections, influenced by geopolitical uncertainties impacting consumer sentiment. However, growth in regions like Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Lakshadweep, and Ladakh reflects increased consumer activity and government infrastructure spending, boosting regional development.

Increased GST refunds for exports also indicate strong cross-border trade and government support for easing industry cash flow challenges.

The taxpayer base under GST has expanded significantly from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore in 2025. Since its introduction, GST has replaced multiple local taxes and simplified India’s tax landscape, strengthening fiscal health and transparency.

Monthly GST collections have steadily increased, with averages rising from Rs 95,000 crore in FY22 to Rs 1.84 lakh crore in FY25. The government hailed GST’s eight-year journey as a success in expanding the tax base and boosting revenue collection.
