Uncertainty surrounds whether the government will give taxpayers additional time as the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline for Assessment Year (AY) 2025–2026 approaches, with just over two weeks remaining. For non-audit cases, portal issues and delayed documentation persist despite an earlier extension from July 31 to September 15.

Although more than 3.90 crore ITRs have been filed as of August 28, this is less than half of what was anticipated. More than 9.1 crore returns were filed last year. Citing ongoing technical issues, discrepancies in Form 26AS and AIS, and hold-ups in TDS reconciliation, professional associations such as the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Chandigarh Chartered Taxation Association have urged the government to extend the deadline.

The government is under pressure to adhere to the compliance calendar for advance tax payments, audit reports, and GST filings, but tax experts warn that another extension is not completely out of the question. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) keeps a careful eye on the volume of filings and portal stability.

Another extension might be taken into thinking if the backlog continues and portal problems are not fixed. To avoid last-minute obstacles, fines, or late fees, taxpayers are being urged to file their returns as soon as possible.
