The Income Tax Department has extended ITR filing deadlines for AY 2025-26, giving taxpayers more time to file returns.

For individual taxpayers whose accounts are not audited, the Income Tax Department has extended the deadline for filing their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26 (FY 2024-25) to September 15, 2025. Companies and professionals who need audits have until October 31; those who need transfer pricing audits have until November 30.
Extended Deadlines for Various Individual and Non-Audit Case Categories
- HUFs, AOPs, BOIs, and individuals are exempt from audit liability.
- The initial due date was July 31, 2025.
- The deadline has been extended to September 15, 2025.
- The extension gives you an extra forty-six days to comply.
For Professionals and Companies (Audit Cases)
- ITRs for audit-required accounts must be filed by October 31, 2025.
- The extension gives enough time to finish audit procedures prior to filing.
For Transfer Pricing (TP) Audit Cases
- Entities involved in international or specified domestic transactions requiring Form 3CEB (TP Audit Report) must file by November 30, 2025.
- Partners in firms subject to TP audits also fall under the same deadline.
Belated Return Option
Missed the deadlines? Taxpayers can still file a belated return by December 31, 2025. However, late filing attracts penalties of up to ₹5,000.
Penalties for Late Filing
- Income below ₹5 lakh: penalty of ₹1,000.
- Income above ₹5 lakh: penalty of ₹5,000.
- Additional 1% monthly interest (u/s 234A) may apply on unpaid tax.
Will There Be Another Extension?
The Finance Ministry has already granted one extension (from July 31 to September 15). With over 4 crore ITRs filed by September 1, experts say another extension is unlikely, unless major technical glitches occur on the income tax portal.
