The mission, Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), is to lift from Sriharikota. The event is also an important achievement for the Indian's specialised space research and takes the country closer torching advanced technologies in outer space.
The PSLV-C60 rocket will launch two small spacecraft, both weighing about 220 kg, into a circular orbit at an altitude of 470 km above the Earth's surface. The two spacecraft to be SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target) will carry out a series of complex maneuvers for docking in the space for the first time by India. Docking will likely occur 10 days following launch. This success will show that India is ready for the other missions, such as the series of missions to the moon and the proposed Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS).
The mission is primarily a demonstration of indigenous technologies, including sophisticated rendezvous sensors, docking systems, and inter-satellite communication systems. The docking mission in space will enable India to enter into that group of nations which is capable of such high precision maneuvers in space.
Upon docking, the spacecraft will conduct more tasks such as power transfer tests and payload experiments. SDX01 will run a high-res camera, while SDX02 will carry a multi-spectral payload and radiation monitor for science. The PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) on the rocket will also carry 24 experimental payloads, hence augmenting the relevance of the mission. These tests will verify new technologies, and gather information that will be important to future missions.
