Infosys, the Indian IT giant founded by Narayana Murthy, has recently laid off 195 trainees from its Mysuru campus. The company cited poor performance and failure to meet internal assessment criteria as the reasons for the terminations.
The trainees were part of the Generic Foundation Training Program. Despite receiving extra preparation time, mock assessments, and doubt-clearing sessions, they did not meet the required standards in their final assessments. As a result, they were informed via email that they would not be able to continue their apprenticeship with Infosys.
This marks the fourth round of layoffs affecting trainees since February. In earlier rounds, about 300 trainees were let go in February, 35 in March, and 240 in April. With this latest round, nearly 800 trainees have been affected by these layoffs.
To support those affected, Infosys is offering free upskilling programs in partnership with NIIT and UpGrad. Around 250 trainees have already enrolled in these programs, and 150 trainees have signed up for outplacement services. Additionally, Infosys is providing a 12-week Business Process Management (BPM) training course for those who choose it, helping them explore alternative career paths.
For those who decide not to participate in the upskilling or BPM programs, Infosys will assist with transport costs to Bangalore and provide a travel allowance for their return to their hometowns.
Earlier, the Karnataka Labour Department cleared Infosys of any wrongdoing, stating that these trainees were part of an apprenticeship program and not regular employees, so labor laws regarding layoffs do not apply.
