In a major relief for air travelers, IndiGo and Air India have begun restoring flight operations to Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh, following the Indian government's decision to reopen 32 airports near the Pakistan border. This move comes after a noticeable de-escalation in border tensions that had intensified following the Pahalgam massacre on May 9.

“In line with the latest government directives, the airports are open for operations. We will progressively commence services on the previously suspended routes,” IndiGo said in a statement, also advising travelers to monitor their flight status for real-time updates.

Air India echoed a similar sentiment, confirming the gradual resumption of flights to key northern and western cities including Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot. “Our teams are working hard to normalize operations,” said the Tata Group-owned airline, urging passengers to stay tuned for updates.

The Airports Authority of India announced that all 32 airports, previously closed due to cross-border drone and missile threats, are now open for civilian aircraft operations with immediate effect.

Passengers flying to or from the affected regions can continue to change or cancel bookings without penalty until May 22, IndiGo confirmed.

The reopening follows a peaceful night across Jammu and Kashmir and other border areas—a first since the recent spike in hostilities. The Indian Army reported no incidents overnight, a hopeful sign that the ceasefire request made by Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations is being upheld.

Operation Sindoor, India’s strategic military response to the massacre, has led to a significant cooling of tensions. With calm gradually returning, the resumption of air travel marks a key step toward restoring normalcy in the region.
