The abduction of three Indian citizens during a recent attack in Mali has sent ripples of concern across New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed late Wednesday that three Indian nationals, employed at the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, Mali, were forcibly taken hostage on July 1, 2025. This incident is part of a broader wave of coordinated assaults by extremist groups in the West African nation.

What Exactly Happened in Mali?

On July 1, 2025, armed assailants launched a coordinated attack on the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, Mali. During the chaos, three Indian employees were abducted. While no group has yet claimed responsibility specifically for the kidnappings, the Al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) extremist group has taken credit for the wider coordinated attacks on various Malian army positions across the country's western and central regions that same day.

The Indian government revealed that numerous military and government installations in Mali were targeted by terrorists on July 1st, highlighting the severity and widespread nature of the attacks.

India's Swift Response

The safety and well-being of Indian citizens abroad remain a top priority for the Government of India. In response to this grave situation, the MEA has issued a strong statement expressing "deep concern" and has been actively engaged in efforts to secure the release of the abducted individuals.

India has formally urged the Government of the Republic of Mali to take all necessary steps to ensure the safe and swift return of the kidnapped nationals. Senior officials within the MEA are meticulously monitoring the evolving situation and are in constant communication with various stakeholders to facilitate their early release.

The Indian Embassy in Bamako is also working tirelessly, maintaining close contact with Malian authorities, local law enforcement, and the management of the Diamond Cement Factory. Furthermore, the Embassy is in direct communication with the families of the abducted Indians, providing updates and support during this distressing time.

Advice for Indians in Mali

In light of the escalating security concerns, the Ministry of External Affairs has strongly advised all Indian citizens residing in Mali to exercise "utmost caution, remain vigilant, and stay in close contact with the Embassy of India in Bamako for regular updates and necessary assistance." This advisory underscores the seriousness of the current security landscape in Mali.
