Indian Government Cracks Down on Obscene Content: Bans 25 Apps Including Ullu and ALTT
In a major move to curb the spread of obscene and pornographic content online, the Indian government has banned 25 video streaming apps and websites, including popular platforms like Ullu and ALTT. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an official directive on Friday, instructing Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access to these apps and their respective websites.
The ministry stated that these platforms were found promoting content that violated Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
While pornographic websites have long been restricted in India, several apps continued to distribute similar content under the guise of entertainment, offering explicit material behind paywalls. Platforms like Ullu and ALTT (owned by Balaji Telefilms) became known for streaming bold and erotic content.
This issue escalated further as pornographic videos began surfacing on mainstream social platforms like X (formerly Twitter), prompting public outcry and government action. The Centre’s decision has been widely welcomed on social media, with many users expressing relief over the crackdown.
List of Banned Apps/Websites:
Ullu, ALTT, Big Shots App, Desiflex, Boomex, Navrasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Fenio, Show X, Soul Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchal App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugee, Mozflix, Triflix, and others.
This decision marks a significant step towards tightening digital content regulation in India and protecting online users from exploitative media.
