Get ready for an early summer! India is likely to experience higher-than-normal temperatures in March, with a significant number of heatwave days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Speaking at a virtual press conference, senior IMD scientist D Sivandanda Pai stated that March temperatures are expected to be above average across most of India, except in parts of southern Peninsular India, where temperatures may remain near or below normal.

Warmest February on Record

This prediction follows an unusually warm February, which was the hottest since 1901. The average temperature for the month stood at 22.04°C, 1.34°C higher than the normal 20.70°C.

Impact on Agriculture

When asked about the effects on crops, Pai noted that nearly 60% of the wheat grown in India is a heat-resistant variety, as per discussions with agricultural experts.

Dry Spell and Rainfall Trends

February saw only 10.9 mm of rainfall, ranking 18th lowest since 1901 and 5th lowest since 2001. Southern India was particularly dry, with just 1.2 mm of rain, making it the 10th lowest February rainfall since 1901.

Looking ahead, IMD forecasts normal rainfall (83-117% of long-period average) across India for March 2025. Northern India, in particular, is expected to receive normal rainfall, driven by Western Disturbances, which have already brought snowfall and rain to Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Another Western Disturbance is expected next week, extending the wet spell till at least March 3.

More Heatwaves Ahead

From March to May 2025, heatwave conditions are likely in most parts of India, except for Northeast India, extreme North India, and southern Peninsular India, where temperatures may stay closer to normal.

As summer sets in early, people are advised to stay prepared for rising temperatures and potential heatwaves in the coming months.
