The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall over several northern states, including Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North Madhya Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh, as monsoon activity is expected to intensify throughout India on Thursday, August 14. A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is responsible for this surge, which is pushing the eastern monsoon trough southward.

Telangana Faces Severe Rainfall

There has been heavy rainfall in Telangana, with overnight downpours in multiple districts. The Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) reports that three locations received more than 20 cm of rain, which disrupted daily life.

There were significant disruptions to flight operations at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. According to sources, bad weather caused 11 flights to be diverted; seven of those flights eventually returned and touched down later in the day.

Alert for North India

In the majority of Uttar Pradesh and the surrounding states, the IMD has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall along with sporadic heavy to extremely heavy showers.

Because of the heavy rain, the government of Lucknow has declared a holiday for all government and private schools, including those in grades 1 through 12. In order to protect the safety of the students, District Magistrate Visakh G. Iyer verified the closure.

Hyderabad Gets Ready for More Rainfall

Given the forecast of heavy rain, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has placed all of its equipment on high alert. Important actions consist of:

  • Cancellation of all staff leaves
  • Clearing waterlogging points and maintaining stormwater drains
  • Restoration of damaged roads
  • Issuing advisories to avoid flood-prone areas and stay indoors

GHMC Commissioner has urged residents to avoid opening manholes during rainfall and to report any rain-related issues immediately

Impact and Precautions

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy showers
  • Stay indoors and keep emergency numbers handy
  • Follow local municipal advisories and traffic updates

The IMD has asked citizens to remain vigilant as North India braces for intense rainfall over the next few days.
