IIT Kanpur and Indian Army host India Green Summit 2024

Kanpur: On World Earth Day, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK), hosted the India Green Summit 2024 at Jhansi Military Station. Led by Lt Gen Prit Pal Singh, AVSM GOC of Sudharshan Chakra Corps, the summit aimed to showcase innovative environmental solutions and foster discussions on climate change and sustainable development within the military infrastructure.

The event brought together Indian Army and Air Force officers from various regions, along with stakeholders like the Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMPTC), Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), India Meteorological Department (IMD), Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), School of Planning and Governance (SPG), Climate Resilient Observing Systems Promotion Council (CROPC), and Construction Industry Development Council (CIDC). Additionally, 15 organizations, including Tata BlueScope, showcased sustainable development technologies, focusing on advanced construction practices.

The summit also marked the anniversary of the MoU signed between IIT Kanpur and the Commander Works Engineer of Jhansi station, intending to make Jhansi Military Station carbon-neutral. This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of the Indian Army and IIT Kanpur to environmental stewardship.

Organized by Prof. Rajeev Jindal Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering, IIT Kanpur, and Colonel Akhil Singh Charak from Military Engineering Services, the summit highlighted the synergy between technological innovation and sustainable military practices. Maj Gen MK Mathur, GOC of the White Tiger division, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of green practices in the military.

Prof. Rajeev Jindal Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering, IIT Kanpur, stated, "The India Green Summit 2024 showcases the collaboration between academia and the military to develop innovative solutions for a sustainable defense infrastructure."

The summit featured keynote speeches and panel discussions on climate change mitigation, sustainable building technologies, and innovations in renewable energy and water conservation for military use. Participants gained insights on implementing these technologies across military stations in India.

Colonel Akhil Singh Charak from Military Engineering Services said, "The Indian Army prioritizes national security and environmental responsibility. The India Green Summit 2024 facilitated the exploration of sustainable technologies and partnerships with institutions like IIT Kanpur."
