Hyderabad adds 65 new electric buses as Telangana expands public transport to 373 colonies, boosting EV mobility and benefiting nearly 7 lakh commuters.

The Telangana government strengthened its electric mobility push on Wednesday as Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar flagged off 65 new electric buses of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) at the Ranigunj Bus Depot in Hyderabad.
The new fleet is part of the state’s plan to expand affordable and eco-friendly public transport across urban and suburban regions.
Public Transport Expanded to 373 Colonies
Minister Prabhakar states that for 2 months, the government did surveil to find out places that are starved of good bus connectivity.
Starting today, RTC bus services will cover 373 additional colonies, benefiting nearly 7 lakh commuters.
It was also mentioned by him that the government will further bring the bus service adding offices located in the IT corridor to ensure a smoother ride to thousands of employees.
The Minister encouraged residents of rural areas to report gaps in transport access so that TGSRTC can introduce new routes where necessary.
EV Fleet Strengthens; More Buses Coming in January
Telangana currently operates 810 electric buses, including 300 buses serving Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
With the addition of the newly flagged-off units and 175 more EV buses planned for January, Hyderabad’s total electric bus count will soon reach 540, making it one of India’s fastest-growing EV public transport networks.
Impact of Mahalakshmi Scheme
TGSRTC Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy highlighted the success of the Mahalakshmi Scheme, which provides free bus travel for women, children, and transgender persons.
Since its launch two years ago:
251 crore zero-fare tickets have been issued
Women passengers alone have saved ₹8,500 crore, significantly reducing their travel expenses
The scheme continues to boost ridership, particularly among economically weaker sections.
