The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued landslip warnings for 18 of 22 districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Kangra, Mandi, and Shimla, due to the state's ongoing severe rainfall. Throughout the state, the rain has created significant difficulties.
Due to landslides and flooding, more than 250 roads have been closed; the districts of Sirmaur and Mandi have the most road obstructions, with 57 and 44 highways, respectively. About 130 locations have had disruptions in their electricity supply, and water services are also affected.
After the meteorological department issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu responded to the inclement weather by ordering the closure of schools in the districts of Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Solan on June 30.
The Shimla-Kalka line's rail service was momentarily halted while workers cleared the rails of fallen trees and other debris. Sadly, the state has seen three deaths in the past day alone, bringing the total number of monsoon deaths to 20. One person died in Shimla district from a fall, and two people drowned in Una and Bilaspur.
A landslip on the Shimla-Kalka national highway (NH-5) close to Koti also resulted in serious traffic congestion and damage to the roads. As the monsoon rains continue, the IMD has issued warnings of moderate to high flash flood hazards in ten districts, including Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Una. Residents are being urged to remain vigilant.
