Low-Pressure System Update
The heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are attributed to the low-pressure area that is clearly marked over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This system which had moved northwest from off the north coast of Sri Lanka was situated about the Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday morning. IMD is predicting this system to lose its strength in the next 24 hours.
According to the IMD, “The well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast moved northwestwards across north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts and lay over the north coastal Tamil Nadu and neighborhood at 1730 hrs IST on 22 October 2025.”
The low-pressure system will continue to move west-northwest and then gradually dissipate into a normal low-pressure area over north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh within 24 hours.
Depression Over Arabian Sea
On the other hand, the depression over the southeast Arabian Sea is proceeding northwards at the speed of 7 kmph. By October 22, it was located 620 km west-southwest from Aminidivi (Lakshadweep) and 980 km southwest from Panjim (Goa). According to the IMD, it will first head north and then change its course to north-northeast during the next 24 hours.
The people living in the districts that are prone to the mentioned storms are advised to keep an eye on the weather updates closely, to avoid traveling without a reason, and to follow the local authorities' safety measures.
