The court has taken a remarkable step regarding the Christmas celebrations, and at the same time, it has considered the environmental issues. The decision of the Supreme Court was to allow the regulated sale and use of certified green firecrackers across Delhi and NCR for a limited period of time. This allowed a four-day burst of these eco-friendly fireworks on the October 18-21 period, giving a relief to the industry and also targeting seasonal pollution.

The panel comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran insisted that regular firecrackers have an enormous effect on air quality. In order to implement measures for compliance, the local authorities will keep a watchful eye on vendors to make sure only certified green crackers with QR codes are being sold. There will be random inspections, and those who break the rule will be penalized. In addition, the court set the bursting hours to a rigid 6 pm to 10 pm time frame and continued the prohibition on the online sale of firecrackers.

What Are the Unique Characteristics of Green Firecrackers?

Green firecrackers are designed with the intention of having less of an impact on the environment and the health of the people compared to their traditional counterparts. The following are some of the main features of green firecrackers:

Lower Emissions: Production of 30-35% lower particulate matter and less damaging gases like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.

Less Noise: Maximum noise levels of 110-125 decibels, while the noise for normal fireworks is above 160 decibels.

Safer Chemistry: Potassium nitrate is one of the non-toxic substances used; the traditional method involves barium nitrate which is a toxic substance.

Certified Authenticity: The CSIR-NEERI logo and a QR code mark the certified crackers, and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) regulates them.

SWAS (Safe Water and Air Releaser), SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium), and STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker) are the popular types of green firecrackers, each of which limiting the pollution without taking away the celebration.

This decision indicates the judicial system's attempt to make it possible for people to have eco-friendly Diwali celebrations when the air pollution in north India is at its worst.
